In the world of entertainment, summer brings with it a very busy convention season. There are multiple Comic Cons throughout the country, as well as conventions dedicated to haunted attraction purveyors, gaming and more. One of our favorite convention companies is Creation Entertainment. What they do to set themselves apart is putting together events dedicated to individual shows and/or fan bases where fans can focus on the singular show they love. They also do this very well. Enter the first ever Creation Entertainment 'Outlander' Convention, 2018.
'Outlander' has been a breakout hit on STARZ since its inception. Based on the books of the same name by Diana Gabaldon, the series follows the story of Claire Randall, a woman who
inadvertently travels back in time to Scotland in the year 1743. The series and books can aptly be described as a time traveling, historical love story of the ages, and fans of the show are die hard. Needless to say, they were more than ready for a dedicated convention of their own.
Having been to multiple Comic Cons personally in the past, it is easy to see the draw as a fan to a convention that is dedicated to a singular show/fan base. While a big Comic Con event may give you access to several different shows and cast panels, they can be overly crowded events where you find yourself stretched very thin trying to make the various panels and photo ops before inevitably collapsing. Creation has done a fantastic job of making their events feel much more personal, less crowded and well organized. This made for a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.
Aside from the general camaraderie among the loyal 'Outlander' fans in attendance, the members of the show's cast were gracious, funny as hell and seemed genuinely happy to be with their fans for the entirety of the convention. Stephen Walters (who played Angus Mhor in the series) was the convention host for the weekend, and he was thoroughly entertaining while reciting poems dedicated to cast members before announcing them, playing his guitar and singing for the crowd, and being seriously funny all the way through. Other cast attending the con was series star Caitriona Balfe, Graham McTavish, Grant O'Rourke, Andrew Gower, Lotte Verbeek, Steven Cree, Gary Lewis, Cesar Domboy, Stanley Weber, Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin. You would never know this group played such serious characters on the show from the amount of laughter they elicited from the crowd during each and every panel. At the same time, they all gave very insightful answers to questions from the crowd and were incredibly humble.
If the first ever Creation Entertainment 'Outlander' Convention is any indication, I'd say there will be many more to come in the future. After all, the show was renewed for not one but two more seasons. On a special note, I can attest to the friendly and helpful nature of the staff from Creation. They made the experience that much more enjoyable. Please be sure to check the link to their site below to look for upcoming events near you!
