Star Trek Vegas 2018 Brings A Huge Crowd, and a MAJOR Surprise!

August 9, 2018

Despite the heat that descended on the bustling city of Las Vegas, thousands of loyal and eager Star Trek fans flooded the halls of the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino Las Vegas to enjoy the annual Star Trek Las Vegas convention hosted by Creation Entertainment. We were honored to be invited to cover the event, and to say it was anything less than amazing would be a huge understatement.

It was a weekend filled with amazing panels hosted by the stars of the franchise, phenomenal cosplay photo ops, groundbreaking VR demos, and a massive surprise announcement that rocked not only the convention, but the internet as a whole. Here are some of the highlights of the convention.

1: Kate Mulgrew: Fan favorite actress Kate Mulgrew graced the main stage of the convention to talk to the Star Trek fans. Known as the first female captain of the Star Trek franchise, Kate did a wonderful job discussing her time on the show, but also dove into some amazing discussions. Discussion topics included our current political climate, the impact her parents had on her life and the upcoming book she has coming early next year, and her incredible meeting with Angela Lansbury that landed her four prominent roles on the hit show Murder She Wrote.  She also had an incredibly insightful Q&A session with many Trekkies who spoke on the emotional impact she and the show had on them. It was a moving discussion to be sure.

2: George Takei: Another amazing panel moment came when the legendary activist and actor who brought the infamous Sulu to life, George Takei, took the stage and spoke to the audience. Here he not only spoke on the special connection with the Star Trek fandom he had and their outpouring of support for him over the years, but he spoke of his work on the hit stage production of his musical Allegiance, which focused on his personal experiences in the Japanese Internment Camps on US Soil during WWII. He also spoke of the current political climate, unafraid to air his well known disdain for current political figures and comparing the atrocities in our nation to the events that shaped him during WWII as a child.

3: Sansar VR and Roddenberry Entertainment Present The Roddenberry Nexus: We had the incredible opportunity to experience first hand the ultimate Star Trek VR experience, known as the Roddenberry Nexus. Billed as the final frontier of fan engagement, Sansar VR showed us just how amazing this VR technology can be. This experience will allow fans to explore never before seen concept art, props, costumes and so much more. With narrated tours and narration accompanying the props and art of the VR museum, Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry Jr, the son of creator Gene Roddenberry, takes Trekkies behind the scenes of their favorite moments from the Star Trek universe. It was a beautiful and breathtaking foray into the world of Star Trek.

4: William Shatner: The legendary Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner, made his way onto the main stage entertaining the audience with his humor and wit while bringing up surprise guests like a reluctant Property Brother (Jonathan Scott), speaking on his three upcoming music albums (country, jazz and a Christmas album), and his upcoming memoir as well with the audience. He also had a very insightful Q&A with the audience that included his charity work, his favorite memories of working on Columbo and much more.

5: The Return of Patrick Stewart: Fans were shocked during the convention to see legendary actor Patrick Stewart make his way onto the main stage. Introduced by Star Trek: Discovery producer Alex Kurtzman, Stewart spoke emotionally about his time as the fan favorite hero Captain Picard, and surprised everyone by announcing that after 20 years he would be returning to the iconic role in a brand new series on CBS All Access. While details on the show are not known for now, (Stewart confirmed they are in story development currently), he did tease that Picard will be seen 20 years after the film Nemesis, and that he may not be the same person fans saw last in the franchise, and will be changed by the things he’s seen. He spoke of wanting to bring the character back thanks to the dark times we currently live in and his being inspired by fans who write to him and speak of the incredible hope and inspiration they received from his role as Picard. The show is one of several new projects being developed by the streaming service as a new focus on all things Star Trek.

6: Star Trek Discovery Panels: Fans were greeted by the cast of Star Trek discovery, who spoke on the impact the franchise had on the cast as both actors and people, and the challenges faced with taking on such a massive franchise. Everything from new Klingon designs for season 2 to surprise character returns, emotional buildups to momentus scenes in the first season, the difficulty learning the Klingon language and working with prosthetic teeth during the show were talked about in the cast discussion on the main stage.

Overall, the convention was a major success. With the amazing panels and discussions, the plethora of amazing fan appreciation through cosplay, and the overwhelming amount of technology that is keeping the franchise alive, Star Trek Las Vegas 2018 was a phenomenal convention that was put on beautifully by the amazing team at Creation Entertainment. It’s no wonder this has become a must see event for fans of the Star Trek universe, and we here at On Request Magazine cannot wait to see what next year holds in store.
